藻井常常出現在中國式古建築,一般在宮殿,寺廟,石窟,戲樓等。 敦煌石窟內的藻井也是國寶級。 它是鑲嵌在屋頂正中央,主要起穹頂裝修作用,除此之外,古人也注入風水元素。
藻,泛指中國古代水生植物,井就是水井意思。 中國古代建築以木構為主,最怕火燒而毀於一旦,因此藻井另一像徵意義便是防火。
二十八星宿中井宿(東井)是主水,同時藻井以荷,菱,蓮等藻類水生植物為主裝飾,乃是希望能藉以壓伏火神作祟。
明清以後的藻井是以龍為頂心主要圖案,亦此別名為龍井。 中國干支文化,龍就是辰,是水庫,亦甪防火意義。

When we visit antique buildings, ancient palaces and temples in China, when we look up at the ceiling, we can always see these cone shape ceiling designs, this is called the caisson ceiling, which is a specialized Chinese dedicated design ceiling.

In Chinese, these specially designed ceilings are called 藻井 (algae, is a plant that lives on water and 井 means water well). As we can tell from its name, it has meaning of water. They believed after installed these caisson ceilings, it has the energy to over any possible fire that could destroy the building. Caisson ceilings after the Ming and Qing dynasty, dragon design were always used as well.
